The concept of a continuing and shifting civil rights legacy and its affects on the way students view history and American culture is the central focus of this Advanced Learning Community— that is, the cyclical nature of the ongoing development of civil rights in the United States. This Advanced Learning Community then, provides students with the opportunity to explore, examine, and investigate the African American struggle and its legacy from a variety of vantage points and both in and beyond the classroom. Students wishing to participate in this program must enroll in both HIST 2327: “The Civil Rights Movement in United States History” in Sequence 3 (Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday, from 10; 30 A.M. to 11:35 A.M. taught by Professor Charissa Threat, and ENGL 4669 “Topics in 20th Century American Literature: Black Memory and Imagery” in Sequence “B” (Monday and Wednesday from 2:50-4:30 P.M.), taught by English Professor Kimberly Brown. The History course on the Civil Rights movement will provide students with the necessary knowledge on the background, historic context, and people involved in the civil rights struggle. The complementary course in the English department gives students a chance to investigate black memory and imagery of in which, the struggle for rights was so fundamental. It engages the artistic and self-reflexive insistence of the moment and explores the use of memoir and visual imagery (photography) as key mechanisms both for understanding factors pushing the demand for civil rights and for self-exploration. As African Americans withdraw from externally imposed identifications, visual images and literature become powerful means by which self-possession (and collective intention) takes place. Finally, in addition to the coursework itself , as students will also participate in a number of linked extracurricular activities designed to help them understand the ‘real world implications of the material of the courses and explore the legacy of the civil rights struggle in the United States and in their “neighborhood” of greater Boston.

Course Descriptions and Co-Curricular Activities:

Here are the two Spring 2010 Semester courses that together with several co-curricular activities comprise the AACLC for this year:

HIST2327 - The Civil Rights Movement in United States History
Professor Charissa Threat, (History Dept.)
Sequence 3
This course explores the origins, ideologies, path, and legacy of the long civil rights movement in American history. Through an examination of primary and secondary sources, the class will trace the origins of the civil rights movement from the post-reconstruction era in the United States, through the triumphs and defeats of the struggle to end racial segregation and the culmination of civil rights legislation in the 1960s. Finally, we will investigate how the legacies and memory of the movement shape our current understanding of civil rights. While this is a lecture-based course, students will be expected to participate in weekly discussions based on the readings and in-class lectures as part of their overall course grade.

ENGL 4669 Topics in 20th Century American Literature: Black Memory and Imagery
Professor Kimberly Juanita Brown (English Dept.)
Sequence: B
This course examines the role of the life story, or memoir in the construction of African American Identity after the Civil Rights Movement. In particular, we will focus on gendered constructions of memory as articulated through a plethora of artistic, personal, and political literary influences. The latter half of the 20th century holds significant meaning for the progression of race relations in the United States, the nuances of media representations and the proliferation of visual autobiography via documentary and photography. We will thus use this course to examine the works of: June Jordan, Deborah Willis, Tommie Smith, Kathe Sandler, bell hooks, Barack Obama, and Marlon Riggs in an attempt to explore the fullest measure of interiority available during this important historical moment.

Co-Curricular Activities linked to these courses:
The following proposed Co-curricular activities will be available for students enrolled in the two classes stress two flash points (art and history) that link the individual courses with the larger idea behind this Advanced Learning Community. Currently, these are only proposed activities. The list may change or expand:.
1. Visit the MFA or Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology.
*Students investigate images concerning African Americans as part of the visual learning and memory of the ACL.
2. Walk the Black Heritage Trail in Boston and visit the Museum of African American History.
*Students link the national rights struggle and history of African Americans with that of Boston.
3. Attend MFA Celebrity Speaker Series: Thelma Golden “Post-Black Art”: America’s Growing Multicultural Fabric” Feb. 3 or 4.
*Students will engage in a conversation about art and artist liberated from racial identity in an ever increasing multicultural world.
4. Visit and explore the Freedom House Archives in the NEU Library and visit the Freedom House as well.
*Students will explore the meaning, legacy, and fight for civil rights in their local community.
5. My intention is to provide some context ahead of the Committee’s meeting with you to make our time with you on these complex and challenging questions as productive as possible.

There are many reasons to consider the restructuring of these two colleges at this time. Perhaps the single most important of these reasons is to increase leadership and decision-making at the college level. The Committee’s task is to explore and evaluate a range of possible new structures for CAS and CJ that may be more effective than our current structures in bringing together faculty and students who share academic interests across disciplines, face similar challenges, and can collaborate actively in advancing their areas of knowledge and practice. The Committee will explore whether forming smaller groups out of CAS could create colleges with a stronger sense of shared mission, and whether CJ and CAS might both gain from involving the faculty and students of CJ in larger networks of interdisciplinary collaboration.

While there may be other opportunities for restructuring the University, the Provost has requested that the Committee limit our consideration to the College of Arts and Science and the College of Criminal Justice. The rationale for limiting scope in this way is that the disciplinary affinities between CJ and the social sciences in CAS are very close, especially in view of CAS’s emphasis on urban public policy in the social sciences. This affinity is not unique to Northeastern; the large majority of highly regarded programs in criminology at other institutions, including all those in private universities, are housed as departments or schools within larger schools or colleges of social sciences or arts and sciences.

The Committee will be exploring the advantages and disadvantages of various possible ways of configuring CAS and CJ with student and faculty groups from all the disciplines involved. Towards this end, we are especially interested in addressing these questions when the committee meets with you:

• Compared to the CAS now, what do you see as the advantages and disadvantages for students in your area of the College’s possibly

· dividing into two colleges: A college of physical/biological sciences and mathematics, and a college of Social sciences, Arts, and Humanities?

· becoming three colleges, with a separate Arts college?

• What differences would you expect to see right now in your NU experience if the CAS broke out into smaller, more focused colleges?

• What differences might you expect to see for students and alums five years from now? The ELG provides funding support to CAS students pursuing a range of experiential projects, including community service, internships, field work, international volunteerism, artistic performance, research, and others that relate to their classroom studies, but may or may not be directly connected to them. Awards are based on budgetary needs, up to $1000. Applications will be reviewed February 15, 2009, and June 5, 2009. Have students visit the web site for application and more information.
http://neu.edu/cas/undergraduate/scholarships.html

Faculty Undergraduate Research Initiative (FURI) - CAS students receive $750 for their assistance during a semester for a research commitment of five or more hours per week. Jumpstart Corps members are paired with preschool children from low-income backgrounds in the classroom setting and work together on language, literacy, social, and initiative skills for one year. Through this relationship, Jumpstart inspires children to learn, adults to teach, families to get involved and communities to progress together. Jumpstart is working toward the day every child in America enters school prepared to succeed.

Founded
1993 at Yale University
National Headquarters:
Boston, Massachusetts
Web Site www.jstart.org

Site Locations
Jumpstart pairs nearly 4,000 trained adults one-to-one with preschool children in need of assistance. During the 2008-2009 program year, Jumpstart is serving nearly 15,000 children across 20 states and the District of Columbia, in partnership with more than 300 early learning centers and 74 universities and colleges throughout the country. Jumpstart supports its sites through offices in five regions: Central, Mid-Atlantic, Northeast, South, and West.

Growth
Jumpstart has grown consistently, averaging more than 20% annual growth in children served since 2002, tripling the number of children reached each year; such consistent and aggressive growth means Jumpstart Corps members now serve to increase the number of adults working with low-income 4-year olds by more than 5% across the entire country.

Proven Results
Jumpstart assesses each child twice a year using its School Success Checklist, a 15- item assessment of language and literacy, social, and initiative skills. This strong preand post-assessment process allows Jumpstart to track a child’s progress, measure program impact, and improve content and delivery.

Jumpstart helps prepare children for future school success. Jumpstart children begin the school year with skills rated similar to or lower than their peers but make statistically significant greater progress in early language, literacy, social and initiative skill areas by the end of the program year. During the 2006-2007 school year, Jumpstart children improved their school readiness skills by 28%.

National Service
Jumpstart began its relationship with the Corporation for National and Community Service in 1995 and is now one of the nation’s largest part-time AmeriCorps programs.

National Sponsors
American Eagle Outfitters, AmeriCorps, Pearson, Sodexo and Starbucks

Program Overview
Jumpstart offers a unique, results-driven, and research-based supplemental program to enhance the educational opportunities for students at Head Start and other early learning programs serving low-income children.

Jumpstart’s program model draws on research and best practices in early childhood education, including materials and resources from the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), the High/Scope Educational Research Foundation, and the Stony Brook Reading and Language Project’s dialogic reading method.

Program Model
During the school year, Corps members serve 8-10 hours each week participating in twice-weekly, two-hour Jumpstart Sessions. The Jumpstart Session is a structured time set aside at a preschool when teams of Corps members devote one-to-one support in the areas of language, literacy, social, and initiative skills to children. Each Corps member spends additional time in his partner child’s classroom, thereby improving the adult-to-child ratio and lending extra support to the teacher and other students.

Core Program Goals
Jumpstart’s early childhood educational goal is to enhance the literacy, language, social and emotional development of young children by capitalizing on positive Corps memberchild and Corps member-family interactions. Jumpstart’s approach focuses on three program areas – School Success, Future Teachers, and Family Involvement.

School Success
Jumpstart’s curriculum fosters early literacy and language skills and promotes social and emotional development in young children. Children recognize and produce rhymes, show signs of beginning reading and writing, understand what books are and how books work, engage in problem solving, know how to make and express choices, interact constructively with familiar adults and children, and understand and express feelings appropriately.

Future Teachers
Jumpstart provides training and hands-on experiences that enable Corps members to become early childhood educators and leaders in education. Corps members acquire a working knowledge of child growth and development, classroom management, and family dynamics; learn effective ways to interact with children to encourage language, communication, and problem solving skills; and understand major research and trends in the field of early childhood education.

Family Involvement
Jumpstart focuses on three areas of family involvement: building strong relationships, ongoing and consistent communication, and the Jumpstart-home learning connection. Jumpstart provides learning activities for the home, thereby reinforcing the learning that takes place during Jumpstart sessions. The purpose of Senior Clearance is to set up a plan outlining every class and requirement that needs to be completed in order for a student to graduate. This is done in an appointment with your Academic Advisor in 1 Meserve, and should be done between 2 and 3 semesters prior to graduating. That way you'll have ample time to plan for scheduling issues and plan accordingly when a required class is not offered every semester.

When you meet with your Academic Advisor, they will discuss all of your outstanding requirements and they will put all of the details in your Senior Clearance Contract, which you and your advisor will sign. Depending on your major, you will need to schedule a follow up appointment with your faculty advisor in the department of your major. Your Academic Advisor will let you know if this is necessary for you to do.

It is very important for you to exactly follow what your clearance contract outlines! If, for any reason, you need to make a change to it, contact your Academic Advisor to discuss the implications of the change.

If you believe that you are between 2 and 3 semesters of graduating, please call our front desk at 617.373.3980 to schedule your Senior Clearance appointment. It's much better to do your clearance too early rather than too late!

Transfer Credit Policy

In the Fall 2006 semester, Northeastern University implemented the following policy concerning transfer credit for current Northeastern Students...

Transfer Credits for Current Students
Once they matriculate, students are expected to complete all course work for their degree at Northeastern, or an entity in a formal contractual, consortial, or partnership relationship with Northeastern, or at an approved study-abroad program. In some cases, in order to clear a deficiency, to permit students access to courses deemed by their respective advisors and colleges to be important for their educations but unavailable to them at Northeastern, or to remain on track for graduation, a student may petition their college for permission to take a course at another accredited institution.

With the approval of the college student services office, students may take courses in Northeastern’s graduate schools.

Students who wish to take courses at another institution and transfer the credit to Northeastern must obtain prior approval from the college student services office. The Office of the Registrar validates accredited institutions to ensure credit transferability. The student must earn a C (2.000) or better for a course to be considered for transfer. Students are responsible for providing documentation on the institution’s accreditation, course grading, and course descriptions prior to approval.

What does this mean for me?
First and foremost, this means that once you are a student at Northeastern, you are required to take all of your classes at Northeastern. The most common implication is that students are no longer allowed to take courses over the summer at local community colleges or other institutions close to home. This policy was instituted in order to strenghten the value of your Northeastern education, as a Northeastern degree is no longer a proxy for a patchwork of coursework from multiple institutions. This policy is common among most reputable colleges and universities, such as Boston University, MIT and Harvard.

Exceptions to the policy do exist and are made on a case by case basis. The most likely case is for students who have failed a class at Northeastern and are now behind schedule to graduate. **Please be careful to note that you must receive a grade of C or better (C- is not an acceptable grade for transfer creidt) at the other institution and transfer credit does not factor into your GPA at Northeastern. If you fail a class here, repeat the course elsewhere and transfer the credit in, the original F grade will still be calculated into your GPA.**

Another allowable exception is if a student finds a program at another institution that offers coursework or experience that is directly relevant to his/her major, but is unavailable at Northeastern. This exception requires a letter of support from the department of the student's major.

Any exception must be petitioned with the Arts & Sciences Academic Standing Committee. Please make an appointment with your Academic Advisor in 1 Meserve to discuss the details of your case. You can make your apopintment by calling our front desk at 617.373.3980.
